In a yang-oriented society, rest is not often prioritized. We may not always give ourselves permission, time, and space to rest, but rest is essential. Stress blocks our body's ability to repair, regenerate, and protect itself. Rest is the body’s natural response, an essential antidote to tension that boosts our immune resources immeasurably. Resting isn't always easy, but the good news is that it's a skill we can strengthen. Rest can happen while we’re sleeping, but all through the day we can practice incorporating rest into everything we do – while walking, listening, cleaning, working, and in our yoga practice. Conscious relaxation is one tool we can use to do just that.
Mind, body, and heart are linked, and they’re quite generous with each other! If the body is tense, it shares its tension with the mind. If the mind is tense, it transfers its tension to the heart. We can put their sharing nature to good use and encourage peace and rest within ourselves. When we bring relaxation to one part of ourselves, it spreads to all parts.
